One day per week electricity in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: People from Maungdaw are getting electricity one day per week for only 6:00pm to 9:00pm and its power also like Kerosene lamp, said a resident from Maungdaw.

“The electricity was controlled by a board with local people from Maungdaw , led by Tun Hla Sein -the secretary of Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP)- with other six members.”

“The board members are collecting regularly the fee from people but, only the electricity is giving one day per week. They collect from people (resident) from 7000 to 20,000 kyat every month as per meter.”

“The system is very bad for students who want to study in the night, now the students use candles or oil lamps as per their status.”

The board had declared at its annual meeting that the board will able to extend  the supply station with new power engines which will give the people every day in the week from 6:00pm to 12:00midnight, said an elder from block number 2 of Maungdaw.

“The board has sufficient budget to buy new power engines, but till now no sign for buying the news engines.”

Some private company who supply power to the people in the day and night and the electricity board has all but they are not willing to buy the power engines. The private company charge the people per month 20,000kyats which is high for poor people, said  a businessman from maungdaw.

“I pay 20,000 kyat, for my shop where I use every equipment –fans, lights, tv and music tape recorder- everyday in the week. “
